1.
Riding through the heartland The weight of the world pressing down And sanity just a touch away She’d love to believe that was true She’s headed for the thin grey light She’s headed for a better life She’s wearing her options down She’s driving out of town People who gave everything Got nothing in return The anger and frustration The talent left to burn There’s nothing left to give And nothing left to learn She’s facing the future down She’s driving out of town On a morning bright with stars A million miles from home Maybe I’ll take you down When you’re driving out of town Driving through the heartland History is a mess A catastrophe for everyone We never can redress And you can never hide With your animus and your pride But don’t let it bring you down When you’re driving out of town
2.
And your beauty surpasses reason But your words cannot inspire All these thoughts may well be treason The truth is often dire But in the twilight hours With the power of light and steel They took you down And pinned you to the wheel And you’re not quite there Our experiments with freedom A disaster for the soul The abandoning of reason The struggle for control But in the twilight hours Of the southern hemisphere I follow you down To love's most wild frontier And you are almost there And in the twilight hour Where the deepening shadows grow I took the life that That the ragged people know And you followed me there

Acceptance 05:06
Up on the ridge they're closed down for the night All over town people dimming the lights And whose is that voice that you hear in the dark As you quicken your step as you walk through the park Now as you lie with your head to the ground Your thoughts are in tune with the night and the sound Of the wind as it stirs the leaves in the trees Did you ever accept that you do as you please Now as I watch you your movements so slow You whisper to me that you really must go And the words that you speak are as subtle as sand That slips through my fingers and clings to my hands That slips through my fingers and clings to my hands And clings to my hands And clings to my hands
4.
I am going home Back to the cleansing fire Travelling alone Cutting it close to the wire All the roads beneath these feet Seem to be the same From the houses on every street People call your name Love is the law The law is unjust It’s a cupful of sand It’s a mouthful of dust Love is the law The judgment is clear We’ve our backs to the wall Heartache and tears All the lies that I have heard I realise were true All my secrets and my dreams Are nothing without you The wisest of the fools Can never save us now No one sets the rules I’ll make it back somehow I’m going home, I’m turning the tide If the past is a dream let’s leave it behind They’re shutting us down at the close of the day We’ll go back to our lives, go our separate ways High above the town Towers break the shoreline Time has worn us down Dreamers dreaming lifelines Stars begin to fall The truth too hard to bear No-one makes the call There’s trouble everywhere Love is the law The law is unjust It’s a cupful of sand It’s a mouthful of dust Love is the law The judgment is clear We’ve our backs to the wall Heartache and tears I’m headed downtown I’m cutting ties I wait for your call Your bullshit and lies I’m riding out I’m pimping my ride I’ve got nothing to lose I’ve got nowhere to hide
5.
Your words are blue as they go drifting by It’s the sound of your goodbye I watch them fade against the open sky To the sound of your goodbye She waits above the waterline With all the doubts that crowd her lonely mind And all the things That she can't undo Will slowly drift away like the evening tide Nothing changes what you say It doesn't matter anyway If life is only just a dream At the dawn of the day above the waterline While all around the city breathes and stirs She'll wait until The morning light And take her place again in the shuttered world And there is nothing you can say It doesn't matter anyway If everything Is just a lie And nothing now can save the day All her dreams will fade away We are mortal We will die And there is nothing you can say It doesn't matter anyway If everything Is just a lie And nothing now can save the day All her dreams will fade away We are mortal We will die Your words are blue as they go drifting by I watch them fade against the open sky Your words are blue as they go drifting by

The Bridge 04:24
Leave me by the bridge I’ll make my own way home Don’t wait for my calls Disconnect the phone There’s a dark cloud falling Time to make amends There’s a cold wind calling This darkness never ends They found her by the bridge She’d been travelling alone The things that she had seen The seeds that were sown But that’s all over now Her fate was set in stone The fire and the gold The angels heading home And the truth comes so hard There is danger from the start The universe will listen But it cannot rule your heart We all choose different paths And who knows which is which There’s a price upon our heads I’ll meet you at the bridge
7.
There’s a thin white light at the edge of the world She doesn’t take flight, she’s not that kind of girl She rides the bus, the number 23 To the shore, to the sea If you never believed that the gods intervene Then you haven’t seen what she has seen She never took that train across America And like a child she flew out of the sun She often dreams the strangers who depend on her So much to lose and life spent on the run She rides the bus the number 22 No time to waste she’s got work to do She thought she knew that you would wait for her This never ends it’s just begun She takes the bus the number 53 She takes it where wild things run free She’s never been so brave before The silent strangers along the shore And when she takes that train across America Like a child she’ll fly out of the sun She’ll only take her necessary animals They never lie they do it just for fun This never ends it’s just begun They never lie they do it just for fun
8.
I hear you late at night I hear you on the phone It’s another trick of the light And endless nights alone These memories are painful Everything runs free It’s business as usual That’s how it seems to be It’s the ones you leave behind Who cause the most regret They populate your mind They cause the gravest threat The chances you declined The one they couldn’t get Your demons robbed you blind It’s business as usual But maybe that’s just this trick of the light But experience says it’s a trick of the night

about

Our third album, and our second featuring non-experimental music. Nine new songs for a pandemic world, recorded between December 2019 and August 2021. Music is a healer...
The songs were chosen from a total of 17, mostly written in a rush of fever-dream activity during the lockdown of 2020, and involving remote collaborations recorded in the musicians' home studios. All the songs were mixed by Fritz Catlin at Shore Tone studios, Hastings.
The songs tackle fractured or unconventional relationships, alienation, stalking, and murder. In the murky world of Necessary Animals, these things - if not necessary - are certainly animalistic.
